Green Smoothie

I reckon I used to cringe big-time whenever I heard the words 'green smoothie'. Ummm no thank you, I do not want to drink a cold, savoury, thick and goopy beverage for breakfast.

Breakfast is meant to HELP me get out of bed, not hinder me!

I'll give myself credit though, I did persist everytime I went out or to a juice bar.

"I'll get the green smoothie, thanks"

Ugh, such a mistake for me every time. I never thought they were cold enough, and that deep, earthy green should have been warning sign numero uno that I was about to experience the taste of grass, just as the grazing animals in the field across from my parent's house had that very morning.

It was all raw kale, and chunky celery, and teaspoons of algae and chorophyll and god-knows-what thrown in for their nutritious but not-so-delicious powers. Well, let me tell you a secret, I know I am a nutritionist, but if the most healthy, nourishing thing in the world is sitting in front of me with every nutrient known to man in it and it tastes like crap, I'm out. If it is less than 'absolutely delicious', I do not want to know about it!

Because, I LOVE LOVE LOVE food! I don't want to waste a meal on not feeling gloriously satisfied after it. There's too many delicious options out in the world and I might miss out of them if I waste breakfasts choosing gluggy green smoothies over waffles, pancakes, chia pudds or even really yummy smoothies for want of better nutrition. There's nothing wrong with those other options, you can of course make them uber-nutritious too!

And for a while I did do that, I whipped up wholegrain blueberry pancakes, crispy gluten-free waffles and decacent plant-based chia pudds but I still wanted a smoothie. It's like a thickshake in my mind because of the texture and viscosity. So it's kinda tugging on and satisfying my unhealthy side (yes I have one..chips are a food group right?) but giving me loads of nourishing goodness which is keeping my healthy side happy!

This green smoothie was born when I wanted to add more fibre to my smoothies without sacrificing flavour or texture. I hope you love it as much as I do!
